Joe Schoen — Senior Project Midterm Demo

For my midterm demo, I created the sounds of the film’s monster roaring and growling. To accomplish this, I rented a microphone from the IDM equipment room and spent some time making as many noises as possible (see documentation video). Afterwards, I uploaded the recordings to the digital audio workstation REAPER and began editing and layering them to craft the final sounds which I have linked at the bottom of the page.

I don’t have much experience recording my own voice so the process was a bit awkward at first (and my roommates probably think I’m crazy now) but it was definitely worth it because I was very pleased with the final results. With the recordings I took, I was able to create three different roars and six different growls. I attempted to create the sound effect for the monster’s footsteps but I wasn’t getting the results I wanted with the recording I took. I recorded myself banging a plastic recycle bin on the ground and the sound was too harsh for it to resemble footsteps even after editing.

I learned some of the vocal techniques I used in the video from the YouTube channel Blipsounds.
